Wait, you're trusting the opinion of a ranking system that allowed Gun Grave to be ranked higher than Evangelion and Azumanga? (I still like Elfen Lied though.)

I just watched the trailer and that was enough to convince me that this show is nothing but bad news. It's basically a violent (tasteless) harem show. Even the Teletubbies are more interesting than this show.

Alright, alright, time to put a stop to this senseless bashing of a masterpiece.

Elfen Lied, Chobits meets Berserk sums it up best. Personally, I'm a fan of both series, and Elfen Lied is my all time favorite anime. Pointing out there there's a lot of boobage and blood isn't going to change this opinion. Yes indeed I do love both of those, but my passion for Elfen Lied lies more within the artwork, musical score, and the characters, and their backgrounds than the story itself.

Lets take the artwork for example, it looks like youre somewhat generic cute girls who have all had very productive puberties. But the thing with my two favorites, Lucy and Nana, is that their appearance is extremely adaptable, when Lucy's running around as Nyuu she looks cute and acts the part. When she's covered in blood, has her hair covering half her face and the small, tired, evil eyes, her appearance takes on a whole different level, and once again, it's suiting. Same for Nana.

The music. Made up almost entirely of ambiant sounds and soft tunes that follow the main theme "Lilium" an opera type song performed in German... by a japanese singer. While it's not much to drop $20 down for a soundtrack (especially since they never released the full version of Lilium) it's extremely suiting to the mood and theme of the show, the music was always right on score for the right moment... except for the ED, that song, Be your Girl, horrible.

The characters backgrounds. Yeah, they lead crappy lives, but it's how bad and in what ways that are interesting to me. Lucy was raised in an orphanage and constantly picked on because she was different from every one else, a lot of people can relate to this situation, and I'm one, which is why I like Lucy's character a lot, I can relate to it. Nana was brougth up in a strange facility, all her life thinking someone is her father who isn't and having horrible cruel, degrading experiments performed on her. Mayu's mother rejected her completely and threw her away in favor of her new husband, who was a pedophile, it's a common condition for the mother to feel it's her fault he's this way and blamed herself for it, but took it out on Mayu. Finally Kohta, who's family was murdered before his eyes by a girl he liked and trusted. All horrible forms of betrayal and signs of exactly how low and dirty man kind is.

Well I'm sure this is already a big comment by now so I'll clinch it here. Let the debate begin.

Elfen Lied is not that bad. But the initial reaction made on mainstream audience with it's shock treatment -that means, blood and gore and nudity some peoples can't help pointing as "work of a genious author who dare to stand out" kind of comments- tickles me off from watching.
Yes there are those who can really enjoy and see better of what it really is as a darker title.

But the type that "OMFG blood and breast and mutilation, this anime must rocks" kind of peoples is annoying, they just want something that seems out of ordinary and perhaps they can feel they look smarter with it.

I blogged this show and enjoyed the series immensely, and I didn't just pretend to like it - I genuinely enjoyed the show because it was interesting to me. You are certainly entitled to your opinion and I appreciate the fact that you have written down your honest feelings about the show, but it's surprising that you despise it so much. I guess we just have entirely different tastes in anime.

It's simple "Don't believe the hype!". I enjoyed Elfen Lied a lot but I watched it when it was freshly fansubbed. So I couldn't marathon it - which often destroys the fun - and there were no reviews around at that time so I didn't expect anything from it. If you read reviews in advance in which a show is praised beyond the stars, you'll seldomly enjoy the show to its fullest. I've noticed that often reviews which badmouth a show can have the effect that you actually enjoy the show because it will usually (much) better than expected and actually enjoyable if you bear with its deficits. Another aspect is "experience". If you recognize a show being a rip-off of another one and a bad one at that you'd probably hate the show. However, if this is the first show of that kind you watched, this flaw won't exist for you. The problem with reviews in general is that people are seldomly fair and don't try to be objective. So many or most reviews put a show either in the 9-10 or 0-2 range on a scale from 0-10. Personally, I cannot seriously consider even really good shows as perfect because all of them have flaws and there will always be a better one. Also if you watched *all* episodes of a show, then it's either not *that* bad (can be enjoyed for its badness maybe) or you are simply a masochist. A well-written review has seldomly disappointed me and if the author makes clear what he disliked about the show, I can decide myself whether I'd judge a show similarly or whether I'd disagree because of having a different taste.

That said, what made Elfen Lied enjoyable for me were the contrasts i.e., cuteness vs. violence and the two faces of Lucy/Nyuu. The topic itself wasn't that far-fetched if you "translate" it to something more realistic that is don't take it literally. Furthermore, I don't really know or knew any similar show, so it didn't feel like old wine in new bottles. While it has some gore, I'd say it's the wrong show for you if you watch it for that or the nudity. It's not the anime version of Kill Bill or Pulp Fiction and never tries to be. You have been fooled by idiotic reviews if you expected that. Horror/gore doesn't really work well in anime for me anyway, I'm not such a sissy. Of course, Elfen Lied has its flaws, it's ridiculous, trashy at times and the amnesia wasn't horribly believable but oh well...

Last but not least, I prefer to watch current/recent shows. If you have a huge library of anime, you'll most-likely something better but at that time it was no doubt one of the best shows around and that little amount of "fan-service" was in flow with show instead of being forced or breaking the mood; actually nudity itself does not qualify as fan service anyway. In my opinion, it doesn't qualify as harem show anyway - except that it's lacking a few male characters like a whole lot of other shows. The center of the show are really Lucy and Nana (in a fairly unerotic way).

I liked it. Was it reviting? no. but it was interesting and unique imo. just because it had alot of blood and breast doesnt mean it unoriginal. but yeah dont ever trust animenfo. they have Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien rated at no 1.

Elenl Lied is a great anime. Its all i ever wanted in a anime. But... i wish the ending was a little different.

I actually watched the whole series in one day, couldn´t stop, just one more episode I kept telling myself.

Yes, the gore and nudity is somewhat excessive at times, and the storyline... But still, I really liked the series. It has something of a surreal feel to it, like a weird dream. The music and artwork is just great. My point being, That there´s more then meets the eye to elfen lied.

I'm sorry if you honestly believe that... The storyline itself was average at best, and really the only strong point of the entire show. The characters themselves were about as cardboard cutout as you can get, and fell squarely within the usual harem drivel. Also the entire dark/light sides of things they were trying to emphasize throughout the show were so excessively exaggerated it can't even be taken seriously, it almost bordered on watching Happy Tree Friends at some points...

I feel very sorry for you if you honestly believe this show to be complex or brilliant, I really am.

If you want to see something genuine story complexity and deep characters. Try watching Monster. Naoki Urasawa truly *is* a genius.
